About Yuan Oliver Jin
Yuan Oliver Jin is a photographer, writer, and artist who currently lives in New York, Utah, and whichever Walmart or truck stop that welcomes overnight parking. He was born and raised in Beijing, China, and moved to the United States at the age of 14. Oliver uses photography as a way to examining his relationship with this nation of immigrants.
His work exists on the peripheries of childhood and home and speaks to his own transnational identity as a Chinese person who lives in the United States. In his photography and writing, the question of place and belonging, both a sense of “placeful-ness” and often a feeling of “placeless-ness” is mapped onto fracture lines of the public and the private, the cultural and the political. Oliver’s work is an ever-evolving mixture of affect, form, and deep photographic observations around the peripheries of childhood and home.
